WPC Board

WPC board, also known as wood plastic composite board, is a kind of engineered wood constructed of a combination of thermoplastics, wood fibre, and other components. This kind of board is a popular option for usage in a range of applications, including furniture, flooring, and decking, because of its strength and resistance to moisture. Its strength, cost and environmental performance depend on its formulation and intended use; it is not universally stronger, cheaper or more sustainable than plywood or timber.

Properties

WPC boards have become more widely used as a substitute to plywood and real wood. Some WPC products use recycled wood or plastic, but recycled content and sourcing must be supported by product documentation. WPC boards are normally created by combining plastic with wood fibres and extruding the resulting material into the required form. Longevity, moisture resistance, and minimal maintenance requirements of WPC boards are its key characteristics. WPC boards have a number of important characteristics:

Durability

Durability depends on formulation, exposure and installation. Fixings, support spacing and expansion allowances must follow the particular product instructions. WPC must not be assumed fire-resistant or suitable for roofing because it contains plastic and wood fibres.

Low maintenance

Some WPC products require less refinishing than certain timber products. They still need suitable cleaning and can fade, stain or weather; compare documented maintenance requirements.

Strength and stiffness

WPC board has good strength and stiffness properties, which make it suitable for use in a variety of construction applications.

Weather resistance

Exterior-rated WPC products can be suitable for outdoor applications, but weathering and thermal movement still occur. Confirm the intended exposure and installation requirements.

Aesthetics

Depending on its surface treatment, WPC can have a highly elegant and sophisticated look. Additionally, it is available in a wide variety of hues and styles. Some finishes approximate the appearance of timber.

Sustainable

Environmental performance depends on raw materials, recycled content, manufacturing and end-of-life options. Using wood fibre does not by itself establish a sustainable product.

Uses

WPC boards are appropriate for a variety of indoor and exterior applications because to their excellent durability and resistance to termites, excessive humidity, and temperature changes. Pools, patio furniture, park seats, outdoor panelling, planter boxes, outdoor deck flooring, and prefabricated homes are just a few examples of external uses for WPC boards.

WPC boards can also be used in interiors as well. The modular kitchen, wall panelling, wardrobes, bathroom cabinets, railings, office furniture and industrial sector are some popular application areas. WPC boards are also employed in advertising on a business level. Additionally, they are employed in the creation of display boards, graphics, exhibition stands, and sign boards.

Decking

This kind of WPC board is created generally from a mixture of wood fibres and plastic resins and is intended for use in outdoor decking applications. Resistance to moisture and weathering depends on the product formulation and specified exposure. It is not a guarantee against fading, movement or deterioration.

Flooring

This kind of WPC board is created generally from a mixture of wood fibres and plastic resins and is intended for use as a flooring material. Resistance to moisture and weathering depends on the product formulation and specified exposure. It is not a guarantee against fading, movement or deterioration.

Siding

This kind of WPC board is created generally from a mixture of wood fibres and plastic resins and is intended for use as siding material. Resistance to moisture and weathering depends on the product formulation and specified exposure. It is not a guarantee against fading, movement or deterioration.

Paneling

This kind of WPC board is created generally from a mixture of wood fibres and plastic resins and is intended for use as a wall or ceiling panelling material. Resistance to moisture and weathering depends on the product formulation and specified exposure. It is not a guarantee against fading, movement or deterioration.

Trim

This kind of WPC board is created generally from a mixture of wood fibres and plastic resins and is intended for use as trim material. Resistance to moisture and weathering depends on the product formulation and specified exposure. It is not a guarantee against fading, movement or deterioration.

Specify the WPC Product for Its Actual Use

A WPC sheet for interior furniture and a hollow decking profile are different products. Start with the required form, dimensions and application before selecting by colour. For exterior use, obtain the product’s installation information, including support spacing, fixings and allowances for movement. A decorative board should not be assumed suitable for a walking surface, railing or load-bearing component.

If a project has fire-performance requirements, refer to SCDF guidance on regulated fire safety products and have the appropriate product or system checked for that application. This reference does not establish a fire rating for our WPC range.

For wood-based alternatives, compare solid timber and PVC-faced plywood. Provide the intended exposure, panel or profile dimensions and finish when enquiring. Product-specific instructions are more useful than a general claim that all composites require no maintenance.

WPC Numbers: Coverage and Thermal Movement

WPC sheets and decking or cladding profiles need different quantity calculations. For a profile, the visible cover width may differ from its overall width because of joints or interlocking edges. The first example assumes a 140 mm cover width and a 2,000 mm-wide area; it does not identify an available Timber House profile or prescribe an installation gap.

Use the Manufacturer’s Effective Width

The example includes 100 mm of excess width before boundary adjustments; it does not mean the last profile may be ripped or fixed in any manner. Edge pieces, joints and fastening requirements depend on the actual system. A short offcut cannot automatically replace a full-length piece. Show the direction of laying and the finished boundaries on the drawing, and confirm the permitted edge treatment before treating area calculations as an order schedule.

Calculate Movement from Product Data

For a simple linear thermal-expansion example, change in length = coefficient × length × temperature change. If a hypothetical coefficient is 0.00005 per °C, a 3,000 mm profile over a 30°C change gives 0.00005 × 3,000 × 30 = 4.5 mm. At 6,000 mm, the same assumptions give 9.0 mm. The coefficient is illustrative, not a measured value for supplied WPC or a recommended joint gap.

Actual movement requirements also depend on formulation, moisture, installation temperature, restraint and the complete fixing system. Obtain the manufacturer’s coefficient or movement table and follow its specific end-gap and fastening detail; movement may be distributed differently depending on where the profile is restrained. Support spacing and load capacity cannot be calculated from cover width. Compare solid timber for a different material system, and identify whether your enquiry concerns an interior sheet or an exterior profile. Include the effective cover width, required lengths, exposure and approved fixing arrangement when preparing quantities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is WPC board made from?

WPC board is made from a combination of thermoplastics, wood fibre, and other components, engineered for strength and moisture resistance.

Is WPC board suitable for outdoor use?

Only a product specified for exterior use should be used outdoors. Formulation, weather exposure and installation requirements affect suitability.

Does WPC board require much maintenance?

Maintenance depends on the product. Suitable cleaning is still needed, and fading or staining can occur; there is no universal comparison with plywood.

Is WPC board more sustainable than plywood?

It depends on sourcing, recycled content, manufacturing and end-of-life treatment. WPC is not automatically more sustainable than plywood.

What indoor applications suit WPC board?

It's used for modular kitchens, wall panelling, wardrobes, bathroom cabinets, railings, and office furniture.
